(KAMPALA, Uganda) November 3, 2024 – The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) awarded a new grant to Medical Teams International to deliver life-saving health care services to refugees and host communities in Uganda.

The $3.25 million project started on August 1, 2024, and will run until July 31, 2025, with additional years that will run until 2027. It will be implemented in a consortium with Humanity and Inclusion (HI), focusing on rehabilitation, and The Transcultural Psychosocial Support Organization (TPO) Uganda, focusing on mental health and psychosocial support.

“This project is designed to provide effective, sustainable, and equitable health care services for refugees and host communities. This grant represents a significant step toward addressing the health care needs of Uganda’s refugee populations,” shared Robert Businge, the PRM Project Manager for Medical Teams International in Uganda.

This grant will help us strengthen preventive, health-promoting, and curative health services for both communicable and non-communicable diseases in both refugees and host communities. It will also strengthen mental health and rehabilitation services and will reduce maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality by promoting reproductive health services, including clinical support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and addressing HIV and tuberculosis.

Additionally, Medical Teams will endeavor to promote equitable nutrition services to prevent acute malnutrition and reduce anemia, with a focus on maternal, infant, and young child nutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women. The project will integrate humanitarian efforts with long-term sustainability.

“We are grateful for the continued support that we receive from PRM as we continue to restore the health of those that most need it. The project will prioritize strengthening community health systems and promoting public health interventions. It will bolster curative and diagnostic services and establish dental clinics and X-ray services in areas where we work. This will go a long way in improving our service delivery,” Jason Evans, Country Director for Medical Teams International in Uganda.

Medical Teams continues to break barriers to health and restore wholeness in hurting communities in Uganda. With partners like PRM, the pursuit of this vision is not only easier but more feasible.
