Fundraising Underway to Meet Critical Health Needs as Crisis Worsens

(Portland, OR) May 17, 2023— In response to conflict and insecurity in Sudan, Medical Teams International, a global health and humanitarian relief organization, is continuing to operate in area refugee camps as we are able. We have also activated our mobile medical team.

Medical Teams has worked in Sudan serving refugees and displaced people since January 2021. Since the conflict began on April 15, Medical Teams has been active in two camps. In late April, Medical Teams’ mobile medical team mobilized at a refugee camp in which we work, serving recently displaced people. We plan to keep providing life-saving care in Sudan by continuing our programs in refugee camps, deploying mobile medical teams for new arrivals of displaced people, and supporting targeted health and nutrition facilities that are overwhelmed and lacking supplies and equipment.

The situation in Sudan is dire. More than 70% of health facilities in Sudan have been closed, and hospitals have been looted, ambulances hijacked, and health workers attacked. Hospitals that are still functioning are running out of blood, transfusion equipment, IVs and other vital supplies. Patients with non-communicable diseases and mental illnesses are at risk of lacking medication, posing an extreme threat to their health. Nutrition clinics are at risk of running out of medical supplements. Approximately 50,000 acutely malnourished children cannot access treatment because of the ongoing conflict. Before the conflict, more than 15 million people needed food assistance in Sudan.

Medical Teams is on the front lines of care for people in Sudan with our mobile medical team, offering compassion to people living through this crisis. We are also supporting specific health and nutrition facilities by providing them with supplies and equipment.

“The ongoing violence in Sudan is putting many lives at risk every day,” said Martha Newsome, President & CEO of Medical Teams. “Our dedicated staff are continuing our humanitarian work in refugee camps, with the goal of saving lives by providing critically needed care.”

“Please consider supporting Medical Teams International’s program in Sudan as we continue to address urgent health needs. We expect the need for life-saving health programming will grow with this increased conflict, and we welcome your generous support.
