Medicine Arrives in Port Sudan for Distribution in Four States

(PORT SUDAN, Sudan) September 11, 2025 – Medical Teams International continues to respond to Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis, reaching more people with lifesaving healthcare despite ongoing instability due to more than two years of civil war. Thanks to International Health Partners (IHP) and Airlink, Medical Teams staff and partners in four states will soon receive desperately needed medicines to replenish their supplies.

This generous donation of medicine will play a critical, lifesaving role and will help to sustain healthcare services. Shortages of essential medicines have severely limited treatment capacity across Sudan, placing lives at risk. Through IHP’s support, Medical Teams will ensure steady supplies of vital drugs for chronic conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes – closing urgent gaps and enabling more reliable, equitable care for refugees and host populations.

Airlink leveraged their airline partnerships to provide free-of-charge transportation from the U.K. to Port Sudan, overcoming constrained supply chains and supporting the overall logistics and delivery of the critical medicines.

“We are proud to partner with NGOs who are responding to protracted crises, especially in Sudan, where humanitarian efforts are chronically underfunded and systems are overwhelmed with needs,” said Peter Frey, Program Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Airlink.

Medical Teams will distribute the donated medicines through its network of Ministry of Health (MoH) facilities and clinics, prioritizing the most underserved communities. This support strengthens Sudan’s fragile health system while empowering Medical Teams to continue providing high-quality, lifesaving primary healthcare in the face of persistent supply chain and funding challenges.

Operating across Khartoum, Al Jazirah, Gedaref, and White Nile States, Medical Teams delivers comprehensive health services through refugee camp facilities and MoH clinics. Services include maternal and child health, communicable disease control, nutrition, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), and chronic disease care, complemented by community-based outreach through trained health workers.

In 2025, Medical Teams supported over 100 health and nutrition clinics and deployed four Mobile Medical Teams, extending care to some of the country’s most vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities.

“Medical Teams is deeply grateful to IHP, Airlink, and all partners whose support is making a direct and lasting impact on the lives of crisis-affected people in Sudan,” said Dr. Robert Lukwata, Medical Teams Sudan Director of Development & Quality.
