Medical Teams International Continues to Deliver Healthcare & Essential Supplies in High Need Areas

(UKRAINE) February 23, 2026 – For four years, Medical Teams International has served near the front lines of the Ukraine war and throughout the country, bringing compassionate health services to vulnerable populations through mobile medical units (MMUs) and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS).

As devastating drone and missile attacks continue to disrupt essential services, destroy infrastructure, and threaten lives, an estimated 10.8 million people need humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Medical Teams provides critically needed health services through direct implementation and the work of its local partner organization 100% Life. Thanks to the support of its main donor the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF), essential medical services continue in areas that are hard to reach and close to the front lines.

Medical Teams’ MMUs travel to remote areas and provide consultations, referrals, and medications. We respond to populations experiencing severe, extreme, and catastrophic levels of need, which is particularly high in the east and south of Ukraine where we work. We engage local doctors and nurses within our MMUs, supporting primary healthcare services, continuity of care, and coordination with local health facilities.

In 2025, Medical Teams provided 78,766 people with MMU consultations and medications and 52,540 people with MHPSS services. Essential to our ongoing work are our 40 community health worker volunteers who are trained to engage their neighbors, doing everything from holding support groups to sharing messages on health topics.

Additionally, 16 Medical Teams psychologists are providing MHPSS services to a diverse range of beneficiaries, including children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Medical Teams providers and volunteers trained in psychological first aid offer valuable support, and they refer patients who might need more specialized care. Mental health counselors hold group therapy sessions and meet individually with people affected by the ongoing crisis.

“Over the past year Russia has decimated the energy infrastructure, and this has made this winter extremely difficult. People were already struggling mentally, physically, and emotionally, but now they are enduring temperatures of negative 4 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and the suffering has reached new levels. This brutal weather is happening at a time when, exhausted by four years of war, there is often only 3-6 hours of power each day and the heating systems have been destroyed or are only partially functional. This is the winter we feared, and people are praying for Spring with little hope of peace.”
