From the moment Ramsey’s life began, his life was at risk. After losing his mother shortly after birth, his grandmother, Betty, took him in — but she had nothing to feed the fragile newborn. Just when she feared she would lose her new grandson, Betty found Medical Teams.

A Tragic Beginning

From his first breath, little Ramsey faced hardship. Moments after giving birth, his mother, Jeska, died at the hospital due to a complication following an emergency caesarean section. After his mother’s death, Ramsey was initially cared for by his mother’s relatives, but the family had little support to care for Ramsey, and things quickly took a desperate turn. The single can of infant formula that the hospital provided to them quickly ran out. Soon after, baby Ramsey began to cry uncontrollably with hunger.

Out of options, his relatives took 2-week-old Ramsey to his maternal grandmother, Betty. However, she also struggled to provide the nutrition Ramsey desperately needed.

“My grandchild was really suffering. There was no breastmilk for him and there was nothing at home to give him,” Betty shared as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Thankfully, Betty shared her difficult situation with others in her community, and they advised her to visit the Medical Teams clinic in her refugee camp. Finally, she would find the support and resources that she and her grandson needed and deserved.

Healing, One Spoonful at a Time

At the clinic, Ramsey was examined and vaccinated. The nutritional team provided Betty with ready-to-use infant formula and offered education on how to safely prepare and feed it to Ramsey. They scheduled follow-up visits every 10 days to ensure that the family had the on-going support they needed.

Not only did Medical Teams provide life-saving care for baby Ramsey, but they also encircled Betty with support–they provided her with counseling to address the stress, depression, and grief from experiencing the loss of her daughter and the pressure to find adequate food for her grandson.

Because at Medical Teams, we know that caring for the whole family is critical to ensure that health is achieved, and sustained long-term. Everyone deserves to heal.

The Next Chapter—Ramsey Today

With Betty’s love and Medical Teams’ care, Ramsey began to recover. By 7 months old, he reached a healthy weight and was joyfully discovering solid foods.

That was July 2024. Today, Ramsey is a vibrant 1.5-year-old — healthy, thriving, and full of life.

Thanks to your support, this little boy who once lacked the strength to cry now dances to music and chases chickens around the camp. “He loves playing outside when the sun is out,” Betty says. “He runs around, digs in the dirt, and laughs with other children.”

Once on a carefully monitored diet, Ramsey now eats what the family eats — posho, beans, greens, and even meat or rice when it’s available.

When asked about the help she received, Betty shared:

“It changed everything. I didn’t know what foods were good for a young child. But the team taught me. They gave us food when we had none. That support brought Ramsey back to life. I couldn’t have done it alone.

Because of you, Ramsey is not just alive — he’s thriving. From a fragile newborn to a joyful toddler, his transformation is a testament to the power of healthcare. Healthcare that can help turn tears into joy, and crisis into triumph.
