Twin Sisters in Uganda

Twin babies, born prematurely, received life-saving NICU care in the Kayaka II refugee settlement in Uganda. The NICU and operating theatre in the settlement is the only one of its kind in the area and serves a population of more than 134,000 refugees.

“These services saved our girls,” their mother Leila said. “And I know it’s saving others too. We need these services to continue.”

Elizaveta in Ukraine

83-year-old Elizaveta, a resident of Kherson region, which is in close proximity to the frontlines of the war, was living with diabetes, hypertension, and deep grief after losing both her sons to the war. A Medical Teams Mobile Medical Unit brought medical examinations, medication and treatment, psychological counseling, social assistance, and rehabilitation support right to her doorstep.

“When doctors, nurses, social workers, and psychologists began arriving at my home, I felt as if it were somehow unreal,” she recalled. “Help had come right to my doorstep, and I could hardly believe this was actually happening. Perhaps God heard my prayers and sent these kind people to assist me during this difficult time.”

Asma Leads Play Therapy

Asma, a clinical psychologist with Medical Teams facilitates a play therapy session with local children in Al Jazirah, Sudan. Our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support teams were able to provide mental health support to over 191,000 people in Sudan this past year.

“I help children, teenagers, adults, and families living with conditions like PTSD and depression,” she states. “Before, no one would come and see me because of the shame. Now, they know what I do, and they come to me seeking help. If they don’t come, I go to them in their homes.”
