Fact:

Over 1,100 healthcare facilities were destroyed or partially destroyed after the Nepal earthquake.

We meet urgent needs, intervening in catastrophes that compel our immediate attention. Disaster response is core to our DNA -- since 1979 we've engaged local health professionals, mobilized volunteers, and distributed donated health supplies to bring healing to those in crisis. We believe in teams and we always partner with organizations on the ground to reach difficult places and have the greatest impact.

UPDATE: We are grateful to generous supporters who have enabled the work of sending health and hygiene supplies to families impacted by both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in the U.S.

Our Approach

Disasters unleash chaos, but disaster response is a science. It's where action, expertise, and preparation come together to make a life-saving difference. Collaborating with the United Nations and World Health Organization, and in partnership with local government agencies, we can mobilize our standby roster of trained and experienced Humanitarian Response Team volunteers to provide emergency aid within 48 hours of a disaster. We also have relief supplies ready to be shipped to support urgent health and hygiene needs for families.

What We Do

  • Direct Health Services:  We provide primary and emergency medical services to people who live in difficult circumstances, have limited resources, and lack access to care.
  • Health Systems:  We work directly with health facilities to train and equip their staff to improve the access and quality of services for the most vulnerable people, including women and children and displaced populations. This includes shipping vital medical supplies where there are none.
  • Community Systems:  We partner with the communities we serve to assure that health interventions have a lasting impact. We help empower people with the knowledge and ability to impact their own health, reduce preventable illnesses, and gain control over their well-being.

Key focus areas

  • Preventing and treating communicable diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, and cholera
  • Identifying malnutrition in young children and mothers, and assuring they receive the care they need to recover
  • Psychosocial services for refugees and displaced people traumatized by war
  • Helping communities prepare for disasters and reduce risks to health
