(DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania) March 18, 2025 – Medical Teams International in Tanzania is thankful to International Health Partners (IHP) for their generous donation of non-communicable disease (NCD) medicines valued at nearly $40,000. The donation includes essential medicines to be used to treat diseases such as hypertension, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, chronic renal disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, sickle cell disease, heart failure, and epilepsy. The medicines will also be shared with Medical Teams’ partners in Tanzania providing health services in the refugee camps.

“Medical Teams health posts at Nduta and Nyarugusu refugee camps provide approximately 30,000 consultations every three months and 5,600 additional NCD consultations,” said Debora Niyeha, Medical Teams Tanzania Country Director. “This donation came at the right time, when our major program funded by the United States government was suspended. The availability of these medicines at this critical time is essential to minimize service disruptions, promote adherence, and improve health outcomes for the people we serve.”

This donation plays a vital role in ensuring that refugees in both camps receive essential treatment for life-threatening NCDs. Because refugees depend entirely on humanitarian aid for their medical needs, access to proper medication is critical. This support will greatly enhance health and quality of life by addressing the burden of NCDs, preventing complications, reducing hospitalizations, and improving overall well-being.

“We are grateful for this generous support from IHP. The ongoing economic crisis and reduced funding for protracted emergencies continue to affect and make it challenging for organizations to sustainably provide adequate health services to refugees. Donations like these relieve health care workers, the host government, and the beneficiaries themselves,” said Lucia Pande, the Tanzania Red Cross Society Secretary General.

Medical Teams International deeply appreciates IHP’s generosity and commitment to improving refugee health care.
