Philanthropic event raised $243,000 for global programs

Portland, OR —Medical Teams International’s female-led Healthy Women, Healthy World hosted their fourth annual fundraiser luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Multnomah Athletic Club. The event is intended to inspire local Oregon philanthropists to act on global health issues impacting women and children. With a room filled with over 300 attendees, the event raised $243,000 for Medical Teams’ global programs benefiting mothers and children.

Healthy Women, Healthy World is comprised of an all-female group of local philanthropists passionate about educating their community around global issues affecting women and children. Currently based in Portland and Seattle, the group has the potential to expand and engage like-minded female philanthropists in communities domestically and abroad.

“We cannot ignore the harsh realities that affect the women and children of our world today. Not when these conditions and diseases are treatable. Not when they are curable,” said Medical Teams’ President and CEO Martha Holley Newsome.

Emceed by local KGW reporter Katherine Cook, the speaker lineup included Martha Holley Newsome, Sarah Thebarge, keynote speaker and author of The Invisible Girls and WELL, and Pat Reser, chairwoman and owner of Reser’s Fine Foods, who delivered a special appeal ask to the audience.

Healthy Women, Healthy World recognized nurse and humanitarian Janey Pinneo with the Outstanding Humanitarian Woman of the Year award to acknowledge her global life-saving efforts as well as inspire fellow audience members to action. Pinneo received a standing ovation when she spoke about the tremendous impact Medical Teams had on her life.

Katherine Cook concluded the event with an invitation to join the Healthy Women, Healthy World volunteer team and attend upcoming quarterly events centered on global health topics. Attendees remained after for a book signing with author Sarah Thebarge.
