More Than a Label

This World Refugee Day, we honor the courage, resilience, and humanity of people who have been forced to flee their homes.

When people are forced to flee war, violence, or disaster, they are often reduced to a label: refugee.

But behind every refugee is a person — a mother, a professional, a leader, a child, a neighbor — created in the image of God and deserving of compassionate care.

Asma is one of them.

Before conflict uprooted her life, Asma was a psychologist, wife, and mother of five in Sudan. For more than 10 years, she dedicated her career to helping people heal and overcome life’s challenges.

Forced to Flee

Then war changed everything.

When violence erupted in Sudan, Asma and her family were forced to flee to Egypt for safety. Like millions of others displaced by conflict, they left behind their home, community, and way of life.

When they eventually returned, they found devastation. Families were carrying the trauma of war, displacement, and loss. Healthcare facilities had been damaged, resources were scarce, and many people had nowhere to turn for help.

A Calling to Serve

Yet Asma saw an opportunity to serve.

Determined to help her community heal, she began volunteering at a local clinic, providing mental health support to people struggling with the emotional wounds left by conflict.

When Medical Teams expanded its work in the area and rehabilitated the clinic, Asma joined the team and was able to reach even more people with life-changing care.

Today, she provides counseling, leads community support activities, visits people in their homes, and helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health care.

“I help children, teenagers, adults, and families living with conditions like PTSD and depression,” Asma says.

Healing Beyond Crisis

This World Refugee Day, Asma’s story reminds us that refugees are more than what they have endured.

Even after experiencing displacement herself, Asma continues to use her skills and compassion to help others heal.

Access to healthcare is often one of the first and most urgent needs after displacement. It can mean the difference between fear and hope, sickness and healing, survival and recovery.

Because of compassionate supporters, Medical Teams provides life-saving healthcare and mental health services in communities affected by conflict and crisis. Through that support, people like Asma can continue caring for their families, serving their communities, and helping others rebuild their lives.

Asma is more than a refugee.

She is a psychologist. A mother. A leader. A neighbor.
