War forced Mazahir and her family to flee.

Before the war, Mazahir worked overnight shifts as a surgical nurse in Sudan, living quietly and peacefully with her husband and daughter.

Then the bombs came. Mazahir and her family fled with nothing but each other, passing through checkpoint after checkpoint until they reached eastern Sudan. Somewhere along that journey, she lost her nursing certificates, the proof of everything she’d trained for.

She found a way to start over.

Mazahir arrived at a camp for displaced families with her husband, her toddler, and no way to prove she was qualified to do the only work she knew. So, when Medical Teams International opened a clinic there, Mazahir showed up anyway, and found a place on the team as a Community Health Worker.

Months later, when an acute diarrhea outbreak swept through the site, Medical Teams set up an Oral Rehydration Point to treat people who were severely dehydrated. Mazahir was there, hour after hour, helping her neighbors survive it.

“I feel very good now because I can help needy people,” she says. “And I enjoy what I always love to do.”

 

Today, Mazahir is helping others find hope.

Mazahir still shares one room with six other displaced families. She still hopes to go home someday. Until then, she’s chosen to spend her days helping others survive what she survived.

And to others who are displaced, uncertain, and searching for hope, she offers this: “Please stay connected to your dreams and keep fighting for the best,” she says. “Keep pushing forward and never stop dreaming.”
