Beyond Refugee
This World Refugee Day, we honor the courage, resilience, and humanity of people who have been forced to flee their homes.
The word refugee describes a circumstance — not a person. Behind that word are parents, teachers, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, students, and leaders. People with gifts to share, communities to serve, and dreams for the future.
David is one of them. A father of twelve, a man of faith, and a community health worker, David has spent years helping families access healthcare and build healthier futures.
Finding Safety and Care
David fled conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo with his family and sought safety in Tanzania. Like many refugees, they arrived carrying not only the trauma of displacement but also the challenges of rebuilding their lives in an unfamiliar place.
As they settled into the refugee camp, David’s family received healthcare through Medical Teams International. When his wife became pregnant, she received care throughout her pregnancy and delivery.
“The support started during pregnancy and continued through delivery,” David said. “The care included antenatal visits, medications, education, and ultrasound services.”
Experiencing that care firsthand left a lasting impression on David. He saw how access to healthcare could protect families, improve outcomes for mothers and babies, and bring hope to vulnerable communities.
Answering a Call to Serve
Inspired by the support his family received, David became a Community Health Worker with Medical Teams, helping other refugee families access the same care that had made a difference in his own life.
He encouraged pregnant women to seek antenatal care early in their pregnancies, taught families about disease prevention, and helped people access healthcare before minor concerns became serious health problems.
“We acted as a bridge between the community and healthcare facilities,” David explained. “We educated families about health, encouraged healthy behaviors, helped people access services, and worked to reduce illness and deaths in the community.”
His faith shaped the way he served. “I believe Jesus died for us, and I wanted to serve others,” he shared. “I saw that helping people through health education and support was important both physically and spiritually.”
Looking Forward
Today, David continues to put what he has learned into practice.
“We use clean water, wash our hands regularly, and seek healthcare when needed,” he said. For David, healthcare is about more than treating illness. It’s about strengthening families and creating opportunities for future generations.
“Helping children and families gives me hope,” he said. “A child who receives care today could become a future leader, minister, or president.”
His message to supporters is simple: “Your support changes lives. It helps refugees, local families, and future generations. Please continue supporting communities like ours and keep us in your prayers.”
This World Refugee Day
More than 41 million refugees around the world have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict, violence, and persecution.
Behind every statistic is a person — a parent, a teacher, a healthcare worker, a leader—with gifts to share and dreams for the future. Through life-saving healthcare, Medical Teams helps refugees and displaced families heal, recover, and rebuild their lives.
This World Refugee Day, you can help provide the care people need to move forward with hope.
