Press Release Sudan’s Faith in Action Coalition Unites Humanitarian Organizations to Alleviate Suffering and Save Lives By Medical Teams International December 23, 2025 (PORT SUDAN, Sudan) December 23, 2025 – The conflict in Sudan continues to inflict devastation and claim lives due to extreme violence, malnutrition, and the spread of disease. To strengthen the faith-based humanitarian response, Medical Teams International is announcing a newly formed network of seven Christian organizations operating in Sudan – the Faith in Action Coalition. Member organizations include Medical Teams International, LM International, Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, Norwegian Church Aid, ZOA International, World Relief, and Medair. Medical Teams in Sudan initiated and brought this effort together, and all members signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in December. Working together, the Faith in Action Coalition will: Advocate for and mobilize humanitarian resources from Christian foundations, philanthropic entities, and donors in Europe and the United States. Strengthen the collective voice of Christian organizations responding to the Sudan crisis. Promote faith-based values in humanitarian action, including dignity, hope, and love. Enhance access to vulnerable communities and deliver lifesaving, multi-sectoral assistance. Foster equitable partnerships and capacity sharing with local Christian organizations and churches. Support sustainable recovery and resilience-building efforts. Ensure accountability to affected populations and donors. “The Faith in Action Coalition is committed to urgently raising awareness and resources to support our continued response, while coordinating our work for maximum impact,” said Birhanu Waka, Medical Teams Sudan Country Director. “The immense and complex needs in Sudan are putting more lives at risk every day. Greater commitments are needed from public and private entities worldwide.” Background The protracted humanitarian crisis in Sudan, driven by the civil war that erupted in April 2023, has created the largest displacement crisis in the world. Approximately 14 million people have been forcibly displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The conflict has destroyed infrastructure, leaving 70-80% of health facilities in affected areas inaccessible or nonfunctional. More than half of the population are experiencing acute hunger. Medical Teams began working in Sudan in 2021 and now operates programs accessible to nearly 2.3 million people across White Nile, Gedaref, Khartoum, and Al Jazirah States. Medical Teams delivers integrated primary health care, maternal and child health, nutrition programming, and outbreak response, including cholera prevention and treatment.
