Partnership with IOM to Serve Forcibly Displaced People and Host Community Members

(PORT SUDAN, Sudan) April 14, 2025 – Devastated by two years of brutal civil war and recent, deep cuts to aid funding, Sudan is experiencing a humanitarian emergency unprecedented in scale. In response, Medical Teams International is expanding its life-saving health and nutrition services in Sudan through a partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Al Jazirah State Ministry of Health (MoH).

The 4-month, $299,247 project, funded by the Government of Austria, will provide access to comprehensive, quality health services for 32,750 crisis-affected individuals in Al Jazirah. The project will support the State MoH in fully revitalizing at least two health facilities and activating a Mobile Medical Team (MMT). Medical Teams will support the deployment of primary health care workers and MMTs to provide outpatient consultation, maternal and child health care (including immunization services, medicines, and medical supplies), mental health and psychosocial services, and nutrition services. It will also support community health services and the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure.

Sudan is the world’s largest and most severe humanitarian crisis. The ongoing, deadly conflict has exposed civilians to horrendous violence and suffering. Over 30 million people (more than two thirds of the population) need humanitarian assistance, and nearly 25 million people (more than half of the population) are experiencing acute hunger. Nearly 15 million people have been displaced both inside Sudan and across borders, including 12 million in the past two years, making Sudan the largest displacement crisis in the world.

The humanitarian needs in Sudan continue to grow, with millions of people in desperate need of assistance. Sweeping funding reductions continue to impact humanitarian organizations’ ability to respond to the overwhelming scale of the need. Roughly $4.2 billion is required to provide life-saving support to more than 5 million people in need in Sudan this year, yet just less than 7% of the funding has been received so far. New donors, private sector partners, and global citizens must step up to fill the gap left by aid cuts.

Medical Teams History in Sudan
Medical Teams started its operation in Sudan in 2021, responding to the refugee crisis in Gedaref State caused by the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia. Medical Teams now supports 94 health and nutrition centers across multiple states in Sudan. In FY24, Medical Teams in Sudan successfully delivered humanitarian assistance across multiple states, supporting health facilities and nutrition centers and reaching nearly one million conflict-affected individuals, including 500,000 people who received medical consultations at Medical Teams-supported clinics.
