Un año para agradecer

En Colombia, cada 31 de diciembre decimos “Año nuevo, vida nueva”. Este dicho popular puede ser interpretado de dos maneras: 1. soltar el pasado e iniciar nuevos propósitos, 2. honrar el año que culmina y que el nuevo sea aún mejor.

Desde Medical Teams Colombia, honrar el 2024 significa recordar y aplaudir por los desafíos enfrentados, por las nuevas personas alcanzadas y, por reinventarnos en esta nueva etapa que inicia para el programa.

Echemos un vistazo a quienes hemos logrado servir. Estas historias que verás a continuación son posibles gracias a las personas que creen en nuestra misión y donan para restaurar la fe en un mundo herido.

Morelba superó su crisis de ansiedad  

Morelba Franco llegó a Turbo, Colombia en 2018, sin embargo, la migración le trajo un profundo impacto emocional. Describe cómo, al llegar a Colombia y ver cómo su vida y la de su familia cambiaron, cayó en una profunda tristeza. “Pasamos de tenerlo todo a no tener nada, incluso dormíamos en el suelo” contó.

Una voluntaria nuestra identificó su caso y fue así como de inmediato gestionamos una cita médica para ella, pues inicialmente tenía síntomas de hipertensión o diabetes que requerían atención urgente. Los estudios médicos de Morelba no revelaron ninguna enfermedad crónica, por lo que fue remitida al área de psicología.

Allí, se determinó que padecía de estrés y depresión, en consecuencia, se le asignaron tres controles psicológicos y seguimiento de la presión arterial. A pesar de las dificultades, las sesiones de psicología le ayudaron a mejorar sus relaciones familiares, y a sentirse más tranquila.

Cuenta que, “todavía hay secuelas, que hay que seguir trabajando. Hay momentos en que me cae la angustia, el querer volver, y la impotencia de que no podemos hacerlo”. Ella explica que mejoró su calidad de vida gracias a la atención que recibió con Medical Teams, pues le permitió mejorar su relación con sus hijos y nietos con quienes actualmente vive.

“Si no hubiese sido por esa ayuda psicológica, yo ya hubiera colapsado.”

Yohelis no pudo acceder a controles médicos durante sus primeros 5 meses de embarazo

Yohelis Materán tiene 21 años y llegó a Apartadó, Colombia hace dos años debido a la situación de Venezuela. Yohelis no pudo obtener su PPT (permiso de residencia) y cuando quedó en embarazo no sabía cómo acceder a controles para su bebé, por lo tanto, su hermana quien es voluntaria de Medical Teams, le recomendó nuestra organización.

Yohelis tenía 5 meses de embarazo y no había tenido ningún control por falta de recursos. Con Medical Teams pudo acceder a controles médicos, ecografías, exámenes generales, y educación en salud y lactancia materna. Además, recibió un kit de recién nacido para ella y su bebé.

“Todo fue excelente. Yo me sentí muy agradecida con esa ayuda, porque no tenía apoyo.”

Durante su embarazo, Yohelis ha presentado algunos dolores, pero nuestro equipo ha estado presente para acompañarla y brindarle atención médica. Actualmente, se encuentra tranquila porque sabe que es normal presentar estos síntomas ya que su bebé está pronto a nacer. Aún no sabe qué nombré llevará su hijo, sabe que será niño, pero no tiene certeza cómo llamarlo.

*Cuando entrevistamos a Yohelis le faltaban 3 semanas para tener a su bebé, sin embargo, pudimos visitarla de nuevo luego del nacimiento de su bebé Dylan.

Luis encontró el tratamiento para su Diabetes en Medical Teams

Hace casi 20 años, Luis Chirino decidió salir de Venezuela a probar suerte en otro país junto con algunos amigos. Ha vivido en diferentes regiones del país, sin embargo, en Ciénaga, Colombia lleva varios años.

Hace unos meses, Tania, voluntaria de la organización, reconoció algunos signos de alerta en Luis, sobre todo por una herida de su pierna que no sanaba, así que lo conectó con nuestro equipo de salud.

Luis es un caso especial, luego de brindarle acceso a medicina general y a laboratorios médicos, se determinó que tiene diabetes, lo cual explica la complicación en sus heridas. Desde ese momento, gracias a Medical Teams Luis se ha podido contar con curaciones y medicinas para tratar su herida y su diabetes. Ha recibido parches medicados que contienen antibióticos que ayudan a cicatrizar y a mejorar la condición de la pierna.

Después de unos meses, la herida ha secado, está más pequeña y tiene mejor movilidad en su pierna. Para Luis nuestro servicio a significado la posibilidad de invertir sus ganancias en un mejor lugar para vivir.

“Es muy buena su atención, es un buen proyecto para uno como venezolano,” afirma Luis.

Adicionalmente, para asegurar un tratamiento a largo plazo, se le ha brindado educación sobre prácticas de higiene y ha recibido acompañamiento en su proceso de regularización en Colombia para que pueda tener su permiso de residencia.

A Year to be Thankful

In Colombia, every December 31 we say, “New year, new life.” This popular saying can be interpreted in two ways: 1. letting go of the past and starting new resolutions, or 2. honoring the year that is ending while hoping that the new one will be even better.

At Medical Teams Colombia, honoring 2024 means remembering the challenges faced, celebrating the new people reached, and reinventing ourselves as a new stage begins for the program.

Let’s take a look at some of the people we served this year. These stories are possible thanks to the people who believe in our mission and donate to restore faith in a wounded world.

Morelba Overcame Her Anxiety Crisis

Morelba Franco arrived in Turbo, Colombia in 2018. However, migration brought with it a deep emotional impact. Upon arriving in Colombia and seeing how her life and her family changed, she fell into a deep sadness. We went from having everything to having nothing, we even slept on the floor” she said.

One of our volunteers identified her case and we immediately arranged a medical appointment for her. Initially, she had symptoms of hypertension or diabetes that required urgent attention. Morelba’s medical studies didn’t reveal any chronic illness, so she was referred for psychological services.

There, it was determined that she suffered from stress and depression, so she was scheduled for 3 psychological check-ups and blood pressure monitoring. Despite the difficulties she’d experienced, the counseling sessions helped her improve her family relationships and feel calmer.

She says that “there are still after-effects, which I must continue working on. There are times when I feel anxious, wanting to go back, and I feel helpless that we cannot do it.” She explains that her quality of life improved thanks to the care she received from Medical Teams. Most importantly, it has improved her relationships with her children and grandchildren with whom she currently lives.

“If it hadn’t been for that psychological help, I would have already collapsed.”

Yohelis Was Able to Access Much-Needed Prenatal Care

Yohelis Materán is 21 years old and arrived in Apartadó, Colombia two years ago after fleeing dangerous conditions in Venezuela. Yohelis was unable to access her residence permit and when she became pregnant, she did not know how to access check-ups for herself and her baby. Her sister, a Medical Teams volunteer, recommended our organization.

Yohelis was already 5 months pregnant when she came in for her first checkup and had received no prior medical care due to lack of resources. With Medical Teams she was able to access medical check-ups, ultrasounds, general exams, and education on health and breastfeeding. In addition, she received a newborn kit for her and her baby.

“Everything was excellent. I felt very grateful for that help, because I had no support.”

Yohelis had some pain near the end of her pregnancy, but our team was there to provide reassurance and assistance. She felt safe because she knew that it was normal to have these symptoms right before a baby is about to be born. She knew that she was having a boy, but she was still not sure what to call him.

*When we interviewed Yohelis, she was 3 weeks away from having her baby. However, we were able to visit her again after the birth of her baby, Dylan.

Luis Found Treatment for his Diabetes at Medical Teams

Almost 20 years ago, Luis Chirino decided to leave Venezuela to try his luck in another country with some friends. He has lived in different regions of Colombia but has been in Ciénaga for several years.

A few months ago, Tania, a volunteer with the organization, recognized some warning signs in Luis, especially a wound on his leg that wouldn’t heal. She connected him with our health team.

Luis is a special case. After receiving medical care and some lab testing, it was determined that he has diabetes, which explains the complications with his wound. Since then, thanks to Medical Teams, Luis has received ongoing care and medicine to treat his wound and his diabetes. He has received medicated antibiotic patches that help heal and improve the condition of his leg.

The wound began to heal after a few months of treatment, and Luis has better mobility in his leg. For Luis, our services have given him the possibility of investing his earnings in a better place to live.

“Their care is very good, it is a good resource for me to use as a Venezuelan,” says Luis.

To ensure his long-term success, he has been provided with education on hygiene practices and has received support in obtaining his residence permit.

As our National Communications Coordinator in Colombia, Lina Hernández works closely with the communities we serve. She has learned that providing beneficiaries with information is a game-changer. In her current position, she oversees a team dedicated to engaging with the people we serve through WhatsApp groups and our very first Digital Library created by the Communications team. These strategies fulfill one purpose: letting people know they are not alone.
