Medical supplies shipped for Syrian refugees
October 29, 2012
Medical Teams International shipped a 40-foot container of medical supplies to Jordan for treatment of sick and wounded refugees arriving from Syria. The shipment of 800+ boxes of supplies is expected to arrive in Jordan on December, 24, 2012. The shipment is anticipated to care for 25,000 people.
The shipment was possible because of assistance from our partner, International Medical Corps.
Refugees fleeing Syria could reach 700,000

Photo courtesy Reuters Alertnet UNHCR forecasts that the number of refugees leaving Syria could reach 700,000 by the end of the year. The previous estimate, 185,000, was surpassed last month.
Every day, up to 3,000 refugees are moving into camps in surrounding countries, placing a substantial burden on infrastructure, security and humanitarian organizations on location providing care.
Women and children make up nearly 75% of those fleeing.
Medical Teams International is in contact with partner agencies in Turkey and Jordan and monitoring for possible medical team support.

Humanitarian aid needed in Syria
Civil war in Syria is causing renewed need for medical supplies for refugees in the country and for those fleeing the conflict into the bordering countries of Turkey, Iraq and Jordan. The United Nations stated that more than 20,000 people have been killed in the 18-month conflict in Syria.
Thousands have fled, amid the relentless sectarian violence. Injured and sick refugees are being cared for by Medical Teams International's in-country partners. However, medicines and equipment are in short supply.
According to the United Nations in July, 2012, the conflict has displaced an estimated 1 million people within Syria. Increasingly, people are being displaced for a second time, as former safe havens become affected by military operations.
Medical supply shipments
Medical Teams International air-shipped aid included 10 Interagency Emergency Health Kits to Damascus, Syria in late April, 2012. An in-country partners has requested an additional 10 kits for Damascus. We are in the process of supporting this request.
We are monitoring the situation in Syria for the possibility of additional needs.
