  • Day 1 | Nicaragua 2010

A long day. Spent only 6 hours in the air but had a 6 hour layover in Houston. I did sleep on the plane since I was too excited to sleep the night before. My teammates are all with me now...Linda, Sarah, Marc, Brian, and Mary. A diverse but nice group. Brian and Sarah are Portland people like me, I like them alot and both have good international experience. I like Mary a ton already... she is 60ish and very experienced in disaster relief work. She already has me thinking about going to Haiti or Uganda in the fall! Only problem is the trips would be 3-4 weeks long...Hmmm.

We are staying at a guest house for the next two nights in Managua, very clean and welcoming. Right now I am relaxing in a wicker rocker with Sarah and Brian out on the open porch. Itʼs warm and the breeze is moving through the palms trees around us.

My room is dormitory style with several beds where 4 women sleep. Bathroom is large with pretty painted tilework.

Poor me, I am coming down with my kidʼs cold. They must have given it to me as a going away present. Hopefully it wonʼt slow me down. Tomorrow we meet with AMC: Accion Medica Cristiana. Theyʼll tell us about stuff for a few hours, then a tour of Managua. So far the drive from the airport shows me a city that is mostly steeped in poverty so it will be interesting to see what they show us. I am eager to head to the mountains to get started seeing patients.
