Extreme poverty impacts health and life in Moldova

Moldova map

Moldova is a landlocked, agriculturally dependent nation with few mineral resources. It is the poorest country in Europe. Though Moldova recently established a centralized health system, the program is in its infancy and faces serious shortages of medical supplies, medicines, and medical equipment. Like other former Soviet republics, Moldova faces elevated rates of death and injury in road traffic accidents. Trauma sustained during a crash is responsible for nearly 20 percent of injuries in the former Soviet Union.

Our work

Medical Teams International has shipped $10 million in humanitarian aid, medical equipment, and supplies to Moldova since 1996. Our volunteers have rebuilt rundown hospitals and clinics, provided medical services, and trained Moldovan medical professionals.

In 2010 we began to work on community health evangelism training in the villages outside of Chisinau. This Community Health Evangelism project will bring much needed health messages along with spiritual messages directly to families. In the fiscal year 2012 we will continue our commitment to community health evangelism training. Our goal is to empower Moldovan people to overcome poverty and disease by mobilizing their intrinsic potential and available resources.
