HIV and AIDS impact health in Mozambique
Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, are prevalent in Mozambique and infection rates continue to rise. The country has approximately three physicians for every 100,000 people. Millions of Mozambicans cannot access health care services which are essential in the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS.
Our work in Mozambique
Medical Teams International is supporting a three year comprehensive HIV/AIDS project, “Building Better Lives.” The goal is to prevent new HIV infections and provide quality care to people living with HIV and AIDS as well as the children orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS. The project focuses on underserved, rural communities in Sofala Province, Mozambique.
We have accomplished a number of successes as part of our work in Mozambique, including:
- An extraordinary 1344 out of 1383 clients referred for HIV testing returned with their results for follow-up counseling and care.
- The project exceeded its year 3 cumulative target of 800 HBC clients. To date a total of 1,103 HIV clients have been enrolled in the HBC program and received services three times a week.
- Peer-to-peer prevention education reached 590 youth in the community.
- 70% of all school-age orphans and vulnerable children now attend school regularly.
