Students create video and hold car wash, raising $608 to benefit the poor

Aimee Havens, teacher at the Deer Creek School in Tigard, Oregon, wanted her students to understand what real life is like for many of their peers in different parts of the world, so she organized an evening Family Field Trip to the REAL. LIFE. Exhibit. The parents accompanied their 5th-grade children and shared the experience of learning about the people whom Medical Teams International serves around the world.

To enhance what the students experienced in their field trip, Ms. Havens helped them create a music video in which they reflected on their experience in the exhibit and what they had learned. In the video, a drummer beats every 4.6 seconds, reminding people of the blinking light that flashes in the exhibit to remind people that every 4.6 seconds a child dies from a preventable illness.

But the students wanted to do more. They organized a weekend car wash, creating flyers to advertize their fund-raiser. The car wash was a huge success, and days later the excited students presented Medical Teams International with a check for $608.

Aimee Havens, her students and their parents have made a difference!
