Prosthetic Professional and Author to Volunteer in Haiti

by Angela Pratt | Dec 05, 2013

(Portland OR, Oct 01, 2012 ) Kevin S. Garrison, author, artist, and owner of prosthetic care company Garrison’s Prosthetic Services, will journey to Haiti on September 30, 2012 to serve people with disabilities alongside Medical Teams International.

The 2010 earthquake left the people of Haiti who lost limbs, or have other physical disabilities, especially vulnerable with limited access to medical care, education or job opportunities. Garrison will volunteer with Medical Teams International’s Haiti Advantage program which provides physical therapy, equipment and training to use prosthetics and support to Haitians with disabilities.

“Successfully providing vital prosthetic services here in the U.S. for the past almost 40 years has been my true passion,” says Garrison. “Taking some time and going to help those so in need is something I feel every health care professional should prepare to do at some point in their career. A time comes to truly give something back, freely provide your expertise, and genuinely create a needed positive impact in the world. What else are we here for if not to help each other?”

An amputee himself, Kevin details his unique story in his autobiography, It’s Just a Matter of Balance, which has been recommended by The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.

Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Medical Teams International has:
◦Mobilized 84 teams and more than 374 medical volunteers to provide care and training to the people of Haiti
◦Delivered medicines and medical supplies valued at more than $10,496,464
◦Provided 2,464 rehabilitation sessions and much-needed prosthetics to Haitians with disabilities
◦Helped to rebuild clinics and medical facilities at various locations throughout the country
