(PORTLAND, OR Mar 6, 2009) Tomorrow, a Portland physician, a Seattle nurse and a nurse from Colorado Springs, Colo., leave for Uganda, Africa. There they will care for families who have been forced from their homes by ongoing fighting in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Dr. Steve Boyer, a physician at St. Vincent Medical Center who cared for war survivors inside DRC last November, will provide medical assistance for the sick in refugee camps across the border in Uganda beginning this week. Dr. Boyer will head up an emergency medical team along with Ann Johnson, Gig Harbor, Wash., and Brenda Maldonado, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Dr. Boyer, an emergency room physician, previously served in Sudan, Afghanistan and Liberia with Medical Teams International. Johnson and Maldonado both have served several times in Uganda and several other Medical Teams International disaster sites.
Media: Dr. Boyer is available for photos/interviews from 7:45 to 8 a.m., March 31st, at PDX Airport’s Northwest Airlines ticket counter. For more information, call 503-341-6620.
The volunteer team will also help dispense $22,500 in medical supplies that they are taking with them to the camps. These urgently needed supplies—including antibiotics, bandages and pain relievers—will help 10,000 people for one month.
“We are helping nearly 40,000 people a month—thanks to teams like Steve, Ann and Brenda, alongside our Ugandan staff,” says Joe DiCarlo, Director of International Programs for Medical Teams International. “We could not be saving lives without these volunteers and our staff who provide round-the-clock care for these people who have nothing and were pushed from their homes. Millions have been killed in this conflict and there seems to be no end in sight. We pray the carnage will end. But until it does, we are there for those who suffer.” adds DiCarlo.
