Since 2001 when I lived in Haiti to organize existing programs and start new ones that now operate under the guidance of the Advantage Program, I knew that I would return once again for a longer stay. Although I have been in Haiti multiple times each year for time spans of a week to months, the current need to be in Haiti full-time is evident. Thanks to assistance from Medical Teams International and permission granted from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) where I hold a tenured Associate Professorship with the distinction of a UC Foundation title, I will be taking an unpaid leave of absence from UTC until August 2011. Thoughts and prayers are appreciated as the Advantage Program seeks to fulfill its mission of meeting the physical and spiritual needs of persons with disabilities in the name of Christ. We treat all persons regardless of faith-base, status, or ability to pay. We are working toward full implementation of our strategic plan developed long before the earthquake of January 12, 2010 to provide disability awareness training, advocacy, accessibility and adaptation through provision of artificial limbs, braces, assistive devices, rehabilitation, and social/community engagement. Perhaps our slogan could be "MAXIMIZING ABILITIES" OR "REALIZING THE POSSIBILITIES". Whatever the case, we are hoping to provide assistance to empower in such a way so that the following can be said:
Go to the people, live among them
Learn from them, love them
Start with what they know, build on what they have
But of the best leaders, when their task is accomplished
The people will remark, 'We've done it ourselves.'
Through your faithful giving of the resources of prayer, talents, time, and funds, the hopes and dreams of the "image-bearers of God" can be realized. Thanks for your support!
