(PORTLAND, ORE - Oct. 14, 2008) Millions of people in developing countries live with chronic and debilitating dental pain. In countries like Liberia where just a handful of dentists practice, dental care is not an option and infections run rampant.
Medical Teams International is working to address these unmet needs by sending international dental teams to the world’s neediest countries, including Honduras, Guatemala, Romania, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Mali, Liberia and Uganda. The Portland-based agency is urgently recruiting volunteer dental professionals to serve in these countries.
International dental volunteers travel for 1-4 weeks depending on the country and provide acute care such as extractions, amalgams, composites, and other treatments. Dates for most teams are flexible and can be set according to the dentist’s schedule.
An informational event for interested dentists, hygienists and dental assistants in the Salem area will be held on Monday, October 20, at Dr. Wes Heringer’s office, 2020 Commercial St. SE, Salem, from 7-8 p.m.
Dr. Heringer will show slides from his more than 15 trips with Medical Teams International. Please RSVP to Eve Ford, international volunteer recruiter, at (800) 959-4325, ext. 1201. A Q & A session will follow the presentation.
For dental professionals interested in volunteering but cannot travel overseas, openings are available with Medical Teams International’s Mobile Dental program. As the largest volunteer-based mobile dental system in the country, this service helps low-income children and adults, the homeless and migrant workers. More than 16,000 people received dental care from nearly 900 volunteer dental professionals last year. Medical Teams International operates 10 mobile dental units in 38 Pacific Northwest counties. Please contact Georgene Burnett at 800.959.4325 for more information.
